Sunday 9/26/54: BoSox win easily in season finale, but Williams goes hitless
Unless Harvey Kuenn (.342) goes 0 for 7 or 0 for 8 in the Tigers' last game of the season against Cleveland, he will end up winning the batting championship over Ted Williams in this Strat-O-Matic replay. Williams entered the season's last game at .341, trailing Kuenn by one point. But Ted went hitless against two Washington pitchers in the last game and ended up the season at .337. The Red Sox won anyway 6-0 as Frank Sullivan pitched a very fine three-hit shutout. Ted went 0 for 3 with a walk against tough Washington lefty Dean Stone. That is not too surprising as Ted has a "BAL" rating of 7R and hit only .250 against lefties in this replay. Ted's best chance for a hit came in the bottom of the 8th against Washington reliever Spec Shea. Shea, a righthander, had an ERA of 4.64 in the replay (6.21 in real life) and had a bad hits-to-innings-pitched ratio. But Williams grounded out to second base and ended the game 0 for 4. |

Frank Sullivan allowed 3 hits while blanking Washington as the Boston Red Sox
beat the Washington Senators by a score of 6 to 0.
Sullivan(7-10) was simply too much for the Washington batters. He didn't
allow much, just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Boston banged out 9 on the
afternoon.
Dean Stone(8-12) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 6 hits and 4 walks.

Saturday 9/25/54: Skowron singles in 9th to break up game
In this Saturday night game at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees salvaged a win as Bill Skowron singled with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie. In the top of the frame, Allie Reynolds gave up a three homer to little-used A's rookie Jack Littrell. The blast tied the game at 4 after Reynolds had been cruising for virtually the entire contest. In fact, the Chief had carried a no hitter into the top of the seventh when Bill Wilson broke it up with his 25th homer of the year. The losing pitcher in this game was the snakebitten Johnny Gray. Johnny came into the game in the 8th with his team trailing 4-1. He stood to be a winner in the event the A's could take the lead following Littrell's tying homer, but, alas, it was not to be. Johnny could not get any Yanks out in the bottom of the ninth. Bauer singled, Mantle reached second and Bauer third on a single and throwing error, Berra was purposely passed, then Skowron delivered his game winning hit past a drawn-in infield. Gray will end the season 0-15. |

Allie Reynolds carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the New York Yankees
won at Yankee Stadium in dramatic fashion over the floundering Philadelphia
Athletics, the final score, 5 to 4.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. Hank Bauer lined a single. Mickey
Mantle stepped up next and he lined a base-hit, and an error was also
committed. Yogi Berra then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Bill
Skowron was up next and he stroked a single resulting in an exciting win for
New York and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. New York
had 11 hits for the game and Philadelphia had 4.
Bob Grim(12-8) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. The
right-handed Reynolds lost his no-hit bid when Bill Wilson homered with two
outs in the 7th inning. Johnny Gray(0-15) took the loss in relief.

Friday 9/24/54: Only two days left in the season; Orioles edge ChiSox
Bobby Young squeezed home Eddie Waitkus with the winning run as Buck Jones' Baltimore Orioles beat my Chicago White Sox 2-1 in a NetPlay game. Virgil Trucks, shooting for his 20th win, was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the tenth with the score tied at 1. The pinch hitter failed, then in the bottom of the 10th came Young's succesful squeeze off Sox reliever Morrie Martin. In real life Trucks also lost a bid for 20 wins by losing to the Orioles, also by a 2-1 score. |

Friday 9/24/54: Ted Williams takes lead over Kuenn in batting race
Swinging a hot bat, Ted Williams has taken over the league lead from Harvey Kuenn in the batting race here in the last weekend of the season in my '54 AL replay. Kuenn had led the league in hitting all season long until now. But today Harvey went 0-for-3 in Cleveland, his average dropping to a season low .342. (He hit .306 in real life in '54.) Meanwhile Ted raised his average to .344 with a 3 for 5 performance in a double header against the Senators in Boston. He also has drawn 132 walks. The Red Sox have two games left, those being on Saturday and Sunday against the Senators. Meanwhile Kuenn and the Tigers must face the tough Indians pitching staff in games Saturday and Sunday at Cleveland, so it won't be easy for Kuenn now to regain the lead over Williams. Interesting note: If Strat used the scoring rules in effect in 1954, Kuenn would still be the leader, because the rules required a player to have at least 400 official at bats to qualify for the batting championship. Ted Williams has only 366 at bats so far in the Strat replay; Kuenn has 669 at bats in the replay. But Williams heads the Strat-O-Matic leader board because Strat uses the modern-day standard requiring qualifiers to have at least 3.1 plate appearances per scheduled game. Williams with all his walks thus easily qualifies. The major leagues have used this criterion ever since the late 1950s. The old rule cost Ted the real life batting championship, because although he hit .345 in real life in '54 to Bobby Avila's .341, Avila was declared official batting champion because he had 555 at bats whereas Williams had only 395. Ted's propensity to draw walks cost him the batting championship. He had 136 free passes in real life in '54. |

Friday 9/24/54: Majeski, Lemon lead Tribe to 7-3 win in '54 replay game; another "Gray" loss
Hank Majeski, giving Bobby Avila a day off at second base, came up with three hits to lead the Indians to a 7-3 win over the Tigers. Bob Lemon won his 19th for the Indians as he went the distance, allowing only five hits. Two of the Tigers' hits were home runs by Wayne Belardi. The circuit blasts were his fourteenth and fifteenth HRs of the season (He hit 11 in real life in '54). Ted Gray suffered the loss for the Tigers, and will end up with an ignominious 0-10 record in the replay (He was 3-5 in real life). Ted is not the only Gray to go winless in the replay ... Johnny Gray of the Philadelphia A's is 0-14. |
