Saturday 9/25/54: Skowron singles in 9th to break up game

In this Saturday night game at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees salvaged a win as Bill Skowron singled with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie. In the top of the frame, Allie Reynolds gave up a three homer to little-used A's rookie Jack Littrell. The blast tied the game at 4 after Reynolds had been cruising for virtually the entire contest. In fact, the Chief had carried a no hitter into the top of the seventh when Bill Wilson broke it up with his 25th homer of the year. The losing pitcher in this game was the snakebitten Johnny Gray. Johnny came into the game in the 8th with his team trailing 4-1. He stood to be a winner in the event the A's could take the lead following Littrell's tying homer, but, alas, it was not to be. Johnny could not get any Yanks out in the bottom of the ninth. Bauer singled, Mantle reached second and Bauer third on a single and throwing error, Berra was purposely passed, then Skowron delivered his game winning hit past a drawn-in infield. Gray will end the season 0-15.

Allie Reynolds carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the New York Yankees
won at Yankee Stadium in dramatic fashion over the floundering Philadelphia
Athletics, the final score, 5 to 4.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. Hank Bauer lined a single. Mickey
Mantle stepped up next and he lined a base-hit, and an error was also
committed. Yogi Berra then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Bill
Skowron was up next and he stroked a single resulting in an exciting win for
New York and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. New York
had 11 hits for the game and Philadelphia had 4.

Bob Grim(12-8) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. The
right-handed Reynolds lost his no-hit bid when Bill Wilson homered with two
outs in the 7th inning. Johnny Gray(0-15) took the loss in relief.
