Wednesday 9/22/54: Yanks edge Nats 5-4

Rookie Bob Cerv had a big day for the Yanks. He drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth, breaking a 4-4 tie with a single to center field, scoring Mickey Mantle from second. Tommy Byrne went the distance for the win.

In the first inning Cerv hit a three run homer off Washington starter Mickey McDermott.

Cerv got only 100 at bats in real life for the '54 Yanks. Almost half of them were in September after the pennant race had been decided. Earlier in the season Cerv had been used by Casey Stengel primarily as a pinch hitter vs. lefties.

In the real life game on this day, the Yanks won 3-0 as Byrne pitched a shutout. The Yanks turned a triple play in the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, Mickey Vernon lined a shot towards right field. Bill Skowron at first made a leaping grab of the liner, ran to first to double up the runner, then threw back to second to nail Wayne Terwilliger before he could get back to the bag.

A film of this game was released by Rare SportsFilms some time in the 80s or early 90s. I bought it on video and watched it again today before playing the Strat game. It captures this ordinary game from that era fairly well, given the age of the film. Some of the camera work is bad, but there are some great closeups of the players at bat, in the on-deck circle, etc. Also the camera work of the triple play is excellent.

Tuesday September 21, 1954 - Orioles come back against Tigers

The light-hitting Orioles appeared down and out against Ned Garver and the Tigers as they came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. They trailed 2-0 and had only three hits against the tough Detroit righthander. Garver was gunning for his nineteenth win and fifth shutout of the year. But the Orioles bats came alive in the 8th as they scored FIVE runs. The big hit was Bob Kennedy's two run single to center field. It came with the bases loaded and one out, and broke a 2-2 tie. The Orioles went on to win 5-2 as Don Larsen held the Tigers at bay in the ninth.

The Tigers scored their two runs on solo homers by Wayne Belardi and Fred Hatfield in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Harvey Kuenn has led the league in hitting all year long. But it looks like Ted Williams may catch him here in the waning days of the season. Harvey is down to .342 after an 0-for-5 outing in this contest. He'd been hitting in the .350s most of the summer. Williams is hitting .341.

Monday 9/20/54: Indians win 1-0 in ten innings, clinch '54 AL replay flag !

It was a nail biter of a game from beginning to end, but the Cleveland Indians finally came out on top over the White Sox, winning 1-0 on Bill Glynn's bases loaded ground single to right field in the 10th.

Jon Grauer managed the Sox and me the Indians in this exciting NetPlay game.

Starters Bob Keegan of the White Sox and Bob Feller of the Indians both pitched magnificent ball, but both were gone by the time the game was decided.

The Sox missed two great scoring opportunities. In the very first inning, they loaded the bases with nobody out against Feller, but Jim Rivera flied out to shallow left and George Kell smacked into an inning-ending double play. In the sixth, Minnie Minoso singled and stole second with one out, but Minnie was nailed trying to steal third. Jim Rivera promptly followed with a base hit to center but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Both Larry Doby of the Indians and Minnie Minoso of the White Sox robbed opposing batters of home runs. And in the top of the 10th with a man on first, Al Smith made a great catch on Sherm Lollar's deep drive into the left center field gap.

The Indians missed a good chance to win it in the ninth when Dave Pope, pinch hitting for Feller, struck out with two out and two on. A few in the crowd questioned the decision to lift Feller for Pope. Al Rosen, who didn't start, was also available to pinch hit.

Rosen, however, was saved until the 10th, at which time he came on to hit for Hank Majeski. Al got a big infield hit just before Glynn delivered his winning blow. The inning had started with Al Smith walking, Bobby Avila sacrificing him to second, and Larry Doby getting an intentional pass.

Sunday 9/19/54: Indians hold on to beat Tigers, can clinch flag vs. White Sox in next game

The Indians beat the battling Detroit Tigers 6-5 and reduced their magic number down to one. They can clinch the pennant with a win tomorrow night at home against the White Sox. Ray Narleski struck out Steve Souchock with the bases loaded to end the game at Detroit today. Souchock had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with yet another dramatic home run. He had won the Friday night game with a walk-off homer in the 11th to give the Tigers a 1-0 win. In today's game, the Indians plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on a single, a wild pitch, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers very nearly tied it in the bottom of the ninth as Tribe relievers Hal Newhouser and Ray Narleski walked three batters before Narleski finally closed the deal.
