Sunday 9/19/54: Bosox overcome triple play, five run Washington outburst in first inning

It looked like the Red Sox were headed for their third straight setback in their weekend series at Washington. Right off the bat in the first inning they scored a run on consecutive doubles by Billy Goodman and Ted Williams, then proceeded to load the bases with none out. But Grady Hatton lined into a TRIPLE PLAY, first to third to second (Vernon to Terwilliger to Runnels).

It was the first triple play in my '54 replay. Maybe the third or fourth in all my years playing Strat-O-Matic.

In the bottom of the first the Senators struck Mel Parnell and the Red Sox for five runs and it looked like a rout was on.

But the Senators would not score the rest of the day against five Red Sox relief pitchers.

Meanwhile the Red Sox chipped away against Bob Porterfield. They scored the tying run in the seventh on a solo homer by Ted Williams, his 28th of the year. And then they finally took the lead on Sammy White's two run double in the top of the ninth. Final score: Boston 7, Washington 5

Saturday 9/18/54: Bertoia homers for another Tiger win

The always pesky and surprising Detroit Tigers stunned the pennant-bound Cleveland Indians as Reno Bertoia homered in the bottom of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie in the replay game of Saturday, September 18, 1954. The Indians had come into the series winners of nine in a row, their magic number down to three over the now-struggling White Sox. But the Tigers have had something to say about it as they beat the Tribe for the the second straight day in their three-game series at Briggs Stadium. Just as Steve Souchock did the day before, Bertoia socked a solo blast to break a tie to win the game. The little-used Bertoia had been inserted as a pinch runner in the late innings and stayed in the game to play second base. He had only 37 at bats in real life in 1954, hitting 1 home run and batting .162. But in my Strat-O-Matic replay he is hitting .323 with, now, 2 home runs. The Tigers have now won three straight one-run games, the first against the Yankees and now these two against the Indians. They definitely get the "overachievement" award in this replay. Their actual record was 64-83 at this point in real life, but in my replay they are now 76-71.
