Pinch Hitting – Team – Replay v. Actual

There is no such thing in Strat as coming in "cold" off the bench to pinch hit. A Strat card is just as good in a pinch hitting situation as any other. Perhaps this is one reason I and "HAL" and other Strat managers used pinch hitters more often in my '54 AL replay than the real life managers did in '54. HAL was my opponent in the majority of the 616 replay games. Via NetPlay, Buck Jones and Jon Grauer provided "live" opposition in probably around 100 of the games.

1954 AL replay final standings, comments

Indians - a strong run in August and September lifted the Tribe past the White Sox. Great pitching, timely hitting carried them. Larry Doby the league MVP, led in HRs (35) and RBI (120). Mike Garcia (21-6) and Early Wynn (20-11) won 20 or more, Bob Lemon had 19 wins.

White Sox - led the league for most of the summer with great pitching and effective hitting. Took great advantage of speed, as they were by far the fastest team in the league. Injuries and lack of hitting in September pushed them back into second place. Still won 99 games however.

Yankees - never a factor in the race. Won many blowouts, but never could seem to get the big hit in close games, as evidenced by 23-32 record in one-run contests.

Detroit - the overachieving Tigers clawed their way to an 80-74 record as Kuenn and Boone carried the offense, and Garver (19-10) proved to be an ace starter ... Kuenn hit .341, was batting champ

Washington- another team that (slightly) overachieved ... this team had more offense than I'd predicted, but poor second-line pitching hurt them ...

Boston - weak bullpen doomed Hub club despite league-leading .264 team batting average ... Ted Williams and Jackie Jensen each hit 29 HRS, Williams finishes 2nd in batting race at .337

Baltimore - scrappy Orioles hampered by severe lack of power, but team found a way to win many games it should't have. Diering a defensive whiz in center ...

Philadelphia - a sentimental favorite of mine, the hapless A's were unable to reach their real life win total of 51, which I'd set as a goal in managing them. Bill Wilson a surprise power man, hit 25 HRs after coming over from White Sox in early June trade.
