Sunday 9/19/54: Indians hold on to beat Tigers, can clinch flag vs. White Sox in next game
| The Indians beat the battling Detroit Tigers 6-5 and reduced their magic number down to one. They can clinch the pennant with a win tomorrow night at home against the White Sox. Ray Narleski struck out Steve Souchock with the bases loaded to end the game at Detroit today. Souchock had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with yet another dramatic home run. He had won the Friday night game with a walk-off homer in the 11th to give the Tigers a 1-0 win. In today's game, the Indians plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on a single, a wild pitch, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly. The Tigers very nearly tied it in the bottom of the ninth as Tribe relievers Hal Newhouser and Ray Narleski walked three batters before Narleski finally closed the deal. |
